BYU professor of nursing earns national certification

Brigham Young University nursing professor Renea Beckstrand was named a Certified Nursing Educator after meeting eligibility criteria and successfully completing a certification examination developed and administered by the National League for Nursing.

For academic nurse educators, certification establishes education as a specialty area of practice and highlights expertise in this role. Beckstrand came to the BYU College of Nursing as an instructor in 1987 and has since worked toward certification.

“Since I first heard about it, I wanted to be the first BYU faculty member to achieve certification,” she said. “Achieving this goal legitimized all the hours I’ve put in and my dedication to my students and my profession.”

In 2008, 662 nurse educators were awarded the CNE credential. Since the program began in 2005, 1,489 nurse educators representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia, including 12 in Utah, have become CNEs.
