BYU professor named "Engaged Scholar" by service group

At the Brigham Young University “Y Serve” luncheon in March, the Utah Campus Compact recognized linguistics professor Lynn Henrichsen with BYU's 2008 Engaged Scholar Award.

This award is given to one BYU faculty member each year in recognition of his or her activities to connect students' academic learning with meaningful service. Henrichsen received this year’s award because of his service-learning work in teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Henrichsen served as chair of BYU's Department of Linguistics and English Language from 2001-2007. In this capacity, he supported initiatives to allow BYU students to go abroad on service internships to teach English to non-native speakers.

He has been a member of the BYU Service Learning Working Group and has participated in the Utah Campus Compact Engaged Scholars conference several times. He has also written a number of professional articles dealing with service-learning, specifically about teaching by novice, volunteer teachers.

Nationally headquartered at Rhode Island’s Brown University, Campus Compact is a consortium of more than 800 colleges and universities across the country that focuses on service-learning and civic engagement. All 13 Utah colleges and universities are represented in the Utah Campus Compact, one of 31 state compacts nationwide.

For more information, contact Lynn Henrichsen at (801) 422-2938.
