BYU presents An Evening of Percussion, Nov. 7.

The BYU School of Music presents An Evening of Percussion in the de Jong Concert Hall on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. The event will include performances by the Percussion Ensemble and Panoramic Steel, both directed by Ronald Brough, and Gamelan Bintang Wahyu, directed by Jeremy Grimshaw.

Tickets are $10 with discounts available for senior citizens, alumni, students and employees. Tickets can be purchased in person at the BYU Ticket Office in the Harris Fine Arts Center or Marriott Center, by phone at 801-422-2981 or online at byuarts.com.

Percussion Ensemble will begin the evening with marimbas, xylophones, drums and cymbals. They will perform Caprice Espagnol by Maurice Moszkowsky, Promise Music by Clif Walker and Ritual Music: Variations on the Numbers 2 and 4 by David Skidmore.

Gamelan Bintang Wahyu, a Balinese Percussion Orchestra, will present traditional pieces such as Belenganjur and Panji Marga as well as an original piece from BYU music composition graduate, Nathan Thatcher.

Panoramic Steel will end the evening grooving with the sounds of the Caribbean on instruments made of 55-gallon steel drums. Their repertoire will include Socking it with Steel by Ray Holman, Coqui by Tom Miller and We Kinda Music by Andy Narell.

This performance will be streamed live from the BYU School of Music's website.

BYU, Liberty University team up to tackle literacy project

The BYU Education Society and BYU Alumni Association, in conjunction with Liberty University's School of Education, are encouraging fans to bring new or lightly used children's books to the game for donation. Drop-off bins will be conveniently located outside the campus bookstore and the School of Education building, as well as at the BYU alumni tailgate in the Liberty Mountain Conference Center. The books will be collected by the United Way of Central Virginia and distributed to children in need.
