BYU to present comic opera "The Gondoliers" June 13-16

Brigham Young University's School of Music will present "The Gondoliers," a comic opera by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, Wednesday through Saturday, June 13-16, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center.

Tickets are $5 for performances on Wednesday and Thursday, and $10 for performances on Friday and Saturday. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.

The opera tells the story of two gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, who have each just been married, according to director Lawrence Vincent. "They are informed that one of them has also just become the king, but only their foster mother, who can't be reached, knows which one. The two decide to rule jointly, leaving their new wives behind, until the true king can be identified."

To complicate matters, whichever one is the true king must marry Casilda, the daughter of the Spanish Duke of Plaza Toro. When all three women show up wanting to know which one is the new queen, the situation gets even more difficult.

The show is double-cast, and includes Zach Milliman and Eric Hanson as Marco, Miles Romney and John Kovalenko as Giuseppe, Andy Rasmussen as the duke of Plaza Toro, Sarah Callahan and Emily Williams as the duchess of Plaza Toro and Karen Whidden and Aubrey Anderson as Casilda.

Vincent is joined on the production staff by Barbara Allen as the vocal coach, Emily Ray as the dramaturg and Danielle Palliser as the production stage manager.

For more information, contact Lawrence Vincent at (801) 422-3165.
