BYU plans Walk of Life Memorial Service Monday, Jan. 16

Brigham Young University will host the annual Walk of Life Memorial Service celebrating the dream of Martin Luther King Jr. and the works of the Civil Rights Movement on Monday, Jan. 16, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Carillon Bell Tower.

Students from the BYU Black Student Union will lead a candlelight processional from the tower to the Wilkinson Student Center Main Ballroom.

The event is free and the public is welcome.

The memorial program will feature speakers Marguerite Driessen, professor of law at BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School, and Michael Styles, MLK commissioner and director of the Utah Office of Black Affairs.

The Black Student Union Choir will perform musical selections, along with a recitation of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The event focuses on the theme for Black History Month 2006, “A Light in the Darkness.”

The Walk of Life program is sponsored by Multicultural Student Services and the Black Student Union. It is the first in a series of events at BYU celebrating Black History Month.
