BYU plans Midwinter Symposium on Books for Young Readers Feb. 2

The third annual Midwinter Symposium on Books for Young Readers, a Brigham Young University conference, will feature Mark and Caralyn Beuhner, Donna Jo Napoli and Gary Schmidt, four award-winning authors of books for children and young adults, on Saturday, Feb. 2, in the Provo Public Library.

Together, Caralyn and Mark Beuhner have published several best-selling and award-winning children’s books, including “Fanny’s Dream,” “Snowmen at Night,” “Dex, the Heart of a Hero” and “It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel.” Caralyn Buehner is the author of other works such as “In the Garden” and “Would I Ever Lie to You?” Mark Buehner has illustrated many children’s books, including “Christmas Day in the Morning” by Pearl Buck and “Harvey Potter’s Balloon Farm” by Jerdine Nolen.

An author of both novels and children’s books, Donna Jo Napoli has published several books listed as best books by Publisher’s Weekly, School Library Journal and the American Library Association. Some titles include “Stones in Water,” “Hotel Jungle” and “North.” She has also received the Golden Kite and the Sydney Taylor Book awards. Napoli is a professor at Swarthmore College.

Gary D. Schmidt has written a variety of books for both children and adults. His work includes topics from biography to suicide, as well as religious themes with biographical tales and retellings. He received both a Newbery Honor and Printz Honor for his novel “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy.” Schmidt is a professor of English at Calvin College.

The workshop is sponsored by BYU Continuing Education, Teacher Education, the Lee Library, the BYU Bookstore and the Provo City Library.
