BYU plans “Evening of Percussion” Nov. 20

With Panoramic Steel, Percussion Ensemble and Gamelan Bintang Wahyu

Brigham Young University student groups Panoramic Steel, Percussion Ensemble and Gamelan Bintang Wahyu will be joining in an “Evening of Percussion” Friday, Nov. 20, in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets at $8-$11 are available at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322, or online at byuarts.com.

Gamelan Bintang Wahyu performs Balinese music from the Indonesian culture. Established in 2008 by Jeremy Grimshaw, it is the first Gamelan group at BYU and in Utah. The students perform on instruments that are handcrafted by Balinese tuners and carvers in the shop of I Wayan Beratha, Bali’s most revered composer and instrument builder. They will be performing “Time and Eternity” by BYU faculty composer Christian Asplund and “Hujan Mas” by Gede Purana.

The Percussion Ensemble performs a variety of pieces with a number of different percussion instruments. They also perform music from a wide variety of genres, including popular classics and modern avant-garde. They will be performing “Promise Music” by Clif Walker, “Big Country” by Bela Fleck and “Waldstein Piano Sonata” by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Panoramic Steel is a steel drum ensemble using standard instruments from Trinidad. It has a large repertoire that includes numbers from genres such as traditional calypso, Soca, Brazilian and popular modern music. The ensemble will be performing “Flamingo Jump” by director and BYU School of Music faculty member Ron Brough, “Dee Mwa Wee” by Andy Narell and “Rainorma” by Aldwyn Roberts.

For more information about the ensembles, contact Ron Brough at (801) 422-3320.
