BYU plans annual "Walk of Life" commemoration Jan. 17

To celebrate the life and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A candlelight walk and memorial program will celebrate the life and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the annual "Walk of Life" at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, on the Brigham Young University campus.

The candlelight walk will begin at the Carillon Bell Tower and lead to the Wilkinson Student Center Terrace, where activities will include performances by the Black Student Union Choir and the Genesis Choir, as well as keynote speaker Don Harwell, president of the LDS Genesis group. A recitation of Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech will also be given.

The theme this year is "I Am the Dream," focusing on how students and their families can learn how to become more involved in their communities and learn an important part of American history.

"This is a great opportunity for all of the community to come together and reflect on the past as well as look toward the future," says Maybelline Smithee, a BYU student and event coordinator. "I'm excited about this year's theme because our goal is to educate the community about Dr. King's dream and how we live it today."

The annual "Walk of Life" program is sponsored by the BYU Multicultural Student Services and the Black Student Union. It will serve as the official opening to its upcoming Black History Month activities.

This event is free and the public is welcome. For more information, please contact Sam Brown, samuel_brown@byu.edu, or Maybelline Smithee at (801) 422-3065.
