BYU Philharmonic Orchestra to present Oct. 11 concert

The Brigham Young University Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Kory Katseanes, will present a concert of classical favorites Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 422-4322 or at performances.byu.edu for $9 or $6 with student ID.

The orchestra will perform “Le carnival romain” by Hector Berlioz, “A New England Pastorale Sketch” by George H. Durham arranged by BYU professor Thomas L. Durham and “Medea’s Meditation and Dance of Vengeance,” op. 23a by Samuel Barber.

The highlight of the evening will be the performance of Musorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” arranged by Maurice Ravel.

The piece was written as a travelogue of someone at an art museum walking from picture to picture, with each movement depicting the theme of the painting. Originally written for piano, “Pictures at an Exhibition” was arranged for orchestra by composer Maurice Ravel, who used various instruments to make the audience feel as if the paintings had come alive.

“This is one of the greatest pieces ever written for orchestra,” said Katseanes. “It features so many different instruments and combinations of instruments.”
