BYU Phi Kappa Phi named Chapter of Excellence by national organization

For the second year in a row, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has recognized Brigham Young University as one of five “Chapters of Excellence” among more than 300 chapters nationwide.

In receiving Chapter of Excellence distinction, BYU’s chapter was praised as a thriving organization that meets often, holds initiations annually and applies frequently for Phi Kappa Phi scholarships, grants and fellowships. The award, presented at the Phi Kappa Phi national biennial convention in Kansas City, Mo., is given to chapters that excel in recognizing and promoting academic excellence in all fields of higher education.

“Those chapters that have earned Chapter of Excellence status are led by committed officers who give generously of their time and talent to honor outstanding students,” said Perry A. Snyder, the society’s executive director. “Officers of award-winning chapters live out their personal commitment to honor and excellence through Phi Kappa Phi.”

The Chapter of Excellence Award includes a citation from the society’s executive director; a commendation letter to chapter officers and campus administration; special recognition on Phi Kappa Phi’s website, in publications and at the national convention; a specially designed logo for use in chapter communications; and a $500 award.

Founded in 1897 and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. The society annually inducts approximately 30,000 students, faculty, staff and alumni. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and the top 7.5 percent of juniors. Since its founding, more than 1 million members have been initiated.

BYU’s chapter faculty president is Susan Easton Black, (801) 422- 6418, and information on the chapter is available at phikappaphi.byu.edu. For more information about Phi Kappa Phi, call (800) 804-9880 or visit www.phikappaphi.org.
