BYU to observe Veterans Day Nov. 11 with variety of events

Including BYU football team's "Salute to Servicemen, Women and Veterans"

Brigham Young University will be honoring Veterans Day Friday, Nov. 11, with a variety of activities, including a patriotic program by the BYU football team called "Salute to Servicemen, Women and Veterans."

The program is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse and will feature patriotic songs as well as addresses by Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall and Chad Lewis, who will speak on his “Wounded Warriors” experiences.

The BYU Air Force and Army ROTC units will begin the day with Veterans Day ceremonies between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. at locations around the Wilkinson Student Center.

In addition to the traditional flag watch south of the Abraham Smoot Building, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony inside the Memorial Lounge on the east side of the Wilkinson Student Center at 9 a.m.

Air Force and Army cadets will then be marching to Brigham Square at 9:30 a.m. where there will be a presidential review with BYU President Cecil O. Samuelson. Gen. James Andrus, a retired three-star general, will then speak and will be presented the Patriot’s Award, which is given to a distinguished BYU alumni or veteran who has served God and country.

Admission to these events is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

In addition, Elder Lance B. Wickman, general authority emeritus of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will deliver the keynote address at a conference honoring LDS service members Friday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Conference Center.

The "Saints at War" conference, sponsored by BYU’s Saints at War Project and Conferences and Workshops, will honor veterans from all  military conflicts. This conference will focus on veterans who served in Vietnam. The $35 conference fee ($25 for spouses) includes lunch and entertainment for all attendees.
