BYU Neuroscience Center plans Brain Awareness Week activities

With faculty members and students from the Brigham Young University Neuroscience Center looking on, Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. recently signed a proclamation designating March 13-17 as Brain Awareness Week in Utah.

The Brain Awareness Week campaign, launched in 1996, has united the Society for Neuroscience with The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and a coalition of more than 1,200 science, advocacy and other health organizations that share an interest in elevating public awareness of brain and nervous system research.

During the week-long educational blitz, society members sponsor educational activities for the general public including lectures, lab tours, classroom visits and exhibits across North America to demonstrate the importance of basic neuroscience research to the health and well-being of the American public.

Derek Martinez, a BYU neuroscience graduate student, will lead a group of BYU undergraduate students in a visit to Grovecrest Elementary School in Pleasant Grove, where they will make presentations to third and sixth graders on brain safety and cellular activity.
