BYU music/dance/theatre students present New York showcase

Seniors in the Brigham Young University Music/Dance/Theatre program will travel to New York in late April to present a showcase of their talent to casting directors, agents and producers in the New York area.

In preparation for their New York Showcase, 17 students will present their audition material for the public during four performances on Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, at 7 and 9 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre (166 Richards Building).

Tickets at $5 for the general public are available at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322, or tickets at $6 can be purchased at the door. All proceeds from the presentation will help fund the New York Showcase project.

"Showcases such as this are a graduation tradition for most nationally recognized master of fine arts programs and many of the best bachelor of fine arts performance programs as well," said Tim Threlfall, BYU Theatre and Media Arts professor and director of the production. "BYU's MDT program is gaining a national reputation and a strong New York showcase is a wonderful capstone experience for the student's training, as well as a great introduction to the professional world."

BYU students and alumni are enjoying great success in the professional world of musical theatre. More than a dozen alumni have been in the Broadway and national touring companies of "Les Miserables," including two in the current Broadway cast who will close the historic show next month and three in the national tour.

BYU Music/Dance/Theatre students are also currently in the Broadway and national touring companies of "Mama Mia" and "42nd Street" and have been in the Broadway and national tours of the popular shows "Cats," "Miss Saigon," "Beauty and the Beast," "Phantom of the Opera," "Footloose," "The King and I," "Annie Get Your Gun," "Sunset Boulevard" and "Jane Eyre."
