BYU museums host educator services open house Sept. 24

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, the four Brigham Young University museums will host an educator services open house from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the BYU Museum of Art’s Lied Gallery that will display the learning opportunities each museum provides.

“Each of the BYU museums house a unique collection that offers curriculum enrichment for any classroom or educational setting,” said Kari Nelson, curator of education at the Museum of Peoples and Cultures. “The museums have various resources such as tours, teaching kits and outreach programs that enrich learning and instruction in the classroom.”

Booths will be run by a representative from each museum and will cover the educational opportunities each museum provides. Visitors will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the museum’s instructional resources and programs.

With this event, the museums are striving to increase the community’s involvement with local educational programs and enhance teaching curriculum through museum incorporation. The event and resources are available for the entire community to enjoy.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for the museums to join ranks and show that even though our collections may differ, our purposes are the same,” said Lynda Palma, museum educator for the Museum of Art. “As BYU museums, we exist to preserve a precious heritage for education, study and enjoyment, whether of scientific, historical or artistic value. We are working together to ignite the public’s passion for museums.”

The open house is held in collaboration with the MOA’s Evening for Educators, an event sponsored by the K-12 Educators from Statewide Art Partnership (SWAP). While registration is required for the Evening for Educators, the open house is available and free to all visitors.

“This event is for more than just educators in a classroom,” said Nelson. “It’s for homeschoolers, scout leaders and families who are interested in educational activities.”
