BYU museums, facilities offer summer fun

Brigham Young University’s museums and other facilities can provide activities and entertainment for students, families and children during spring and summer terms.

Museums

• The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum southeast of the Marriott Center is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Every Wednesday at 11 a.m., children ages 10 and younger can enjoy story time at the museum. The event is free each week, and registration is not necessary. Kids ages 5 to12 are welcome at Saturday Safari at the museum. Each Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon participants will be transported to rain forests, deep ocean trenches, deserts and tundras to learn about the animals that inhabit each place. • The Museum of Peoples and Cultures, located at 700 N. 100 East in Provo, presents a new exhibit “New Lives: Building Community at Fourmile Ruin.” This exhibit features pottery and other artifacts from the Pueblo people. The museum offers children’s programs as well as various date nights and cultural events. Teaching kits and tours are available, and volunteers are always welcome. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Admission is free. For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

• The BYU Earth Science Museum at 1683 N. Canyon Road in Provo features dinosaur skeletons of a camptosaurus and an allosaurus, a mural of the Utah-Colorado region in the Jurassic Period, a 150-million-year-old dinosaur egg and a preparation lab window showing museum personnel preparing fossils. Visitors may touch real fossils at the fossil touch table and see a unique diceratops skull. Admission is free. The museum will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call (801) 422-3680.

• The Museum of Art north of the Harris Fine Arts Center is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with late hours until 9 p.m. on Thursday. Saturday hours are noon to 5 p.m. Community members are invited to explore the three temporary exhibitions — “Visions of the Southwest: From the Diane and Sam Stewart Art Collection,” “Dan Steinhilber: Contemporary Art Exhibition” and “Walter Wick: Games, Gizmos and Toys in the Attic” — as well as the permanent exhibition, “American Dreams: Selected Works from the Museum's Permanent Collection of American Art.” Admission is free. Games, Outdoors Unlimited, Yoga and Aerobics

• The BYU Games Center in the Wilkinson Student Center offers bowling Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to midnight and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

• Outdoors Unlimited in the Wilkinson Student Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It offers rentals for bikes, skates, kayaks, rafts, canoes and rock climbing and backpacking gear. Outdoors Unlimited will also host rafting trips down the Green River during the summer. For more information, visit outdoors.byu.edu or call (801) 422-2708.

• Women’s Services and Resources will host "Revitalizing Yoga" Monday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. in 5519 Wilkinson Student Center. The class will teach simple yoga techniques designed to give participants more energy and clearer minds. Admission is free, and the public is welcome. • Women’s Services and Resources will host “Mindfulness Meditation” weekly on Wednesday beginning May 6 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Visit wsr.byu.edu for location and details. Admission is free, and the public is welcome. For more information, contact Women’s Services and Resources at (801) 422-4877.

• BYU offers noncredit aerobics classes in the Richards Building during spring and summer terms. Faculty, staff, students and their spouses, as well as anyone with a college ID, can register for both terms for $38, which includes two classes per week. Community members may participate for an additional $5 fee. Participants may register at 112 Richards Building. Classes include water aerobics, power yoga, high-low “kardio kickbox,” pilates, “power sculpt ‘n’ tone” and “stepkardio.” For more information, visit aerobics.byu.edu, or contact the Richards Building information line at (801) 422-3644.

Camps and Workshops

• A wide variety of teacher education, sports, dance and arts camps and workshops will be available throughout the summer on the BYU campus for children, teenagers and adults. Visit the BYU Continuing Education Web site, ce.byu.edu, for more information.

Committed to community: BYU students unite with Food & Care Coalition to build hydroponics greenhouse
