BYU Museum of Peoples, Cultures receives major grant

For Casa Grandes exhibit

Brigham Young University’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures received $134,172 in grant money from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to support a 28-month project called “Casas Grandes,” which will begin this September.

Students enrolled in the Museum Practices Program will gain real-life experience through research, photography, exhibition planning and writing.

"We are BYU's teaching museum, and we want to allow students as much learning and hands-on experience as possible,” said Marti Allen, museum director. “This project falls right in line with our mission.”

The project not only allows students great experience, but it also helps the museum achieve one of its main objectives: preserving cultural heritage.

"We have a very notable collection of Casa Grandes pottery," said museum curator Glenna Nielsen. "It needs to be researched, exhibited and published. It is part of a shared heritage with Native America, Mexico and the United States."

Museums for America is the institute’s largest grant program for museums, providing more than $17 million in federal grants to support the role of museums in American society to sustain cultural heritage, to support lifelong learning and to be centers of community engagement.

BYU's Museum of Peoples and Cultures is located on the corner of 700 North 100 East in Provo and is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information or to schedule a guided tour, call (801) 422-0020.
