BYU math teacher receives award, will deliver Nov. 6 lecture

The Brigham Young University Department of Mathematics has chosen Chris Grant, a professor of mathematics, to receive the department’s third annual Distinguished Teaching Award.

The award will be presented on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 4 p.m. in 1170 James E. Talmage Building. Following the award presentation, Grant will deliver a lecture on “Ernst Zermelo and the Ranking of Tournaments.” A reception will be hosted in the hallway next to the lecture room at 3:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

The Distinguished Teaching Award was established by a gift from Carolyn Savage Wright and the Kenneth C. Savage Foundation as a tribute to the many dedicated teachers in the BYU Department of Mathematics. The award honors faculty who are widely recognized as extraordinarily successful in their teaching, foster curiosity and generate excitement about mathematics in their students and have documented teaching effectiveness and influence beyond their own classroom.

Grant has distinguished himself as an exemplary teacher. The mathematics and engineering students who take his often rigorous and demanding classes routinely find him to be their “best math teacher” or even “best teacher at BYU.”

The award comes with a $1,000 stipend and possession of the sculpture “Wildfire” until presentation of the award next year. The sculpture is a solid bronze wild sphere crafted by Helaman Ferguson, a former member of the BYU Department of Mathematics.
