BYU master of social work program celebrates anniversary with conference

The Brigham Young University Social Work Alumni Conference will celebrate former students as well as the 25th anniversary of its master’s degree program on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 8 and 9.

For more information and to register for the conference, call (801) 422- 0624 or visit http://alumni.byu.edu/Sections/Chapters/chaphome4.cfm?ChpID=413.

Various events are scheduled over the two-day conference and include:

Thursday, Nov. 8

A tailgate party will be held prior to the BYU vs. TCU football game from 4 to 7 p.m. at Helaman Field, directly south of LaVell Edwards Stadium. The party — including food, games, music and prizes — is free, but online registration is required so organizers can order enough food.

A block of seats at the football game is reserved for conference attendees. To purchase these tickets, visit the Web site at http://alumni.byu.edu/Sections/Chapters/chaphome4.cfm?ChpID=413 and follow the instructions.

Friday, Nov. 9

The conference will begin at 9 a.m with the address “How Firm a Foundation: Strengthening Families and Children in Crisis” at the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center. Alumnus Jed Ericksen, director of the Division of Psychiatric Crisis, will be the speaker. Ericksen is a leader in the field of crisis intervention and recently led the crisis intervention effort following the February 2007 Trolley Square shootings in Salt Lake City.

Following lunch, breakout sessions by six different alumni presenters will be offered from 1:30 to 5 p.m. The all-day event is worth six CEU credits. The credits will cost $60 for alumni and $90 for guests.

At 5 p.m., participants can view how campus has changed since they graduated. Tours of the Minerva Teichert "Pageants in Paint" exhibit at the Museum of Art or the new Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center will be available.

Dinner will be held in the Ernest L. Wilkinson Student Center Skyroom at 6 p.m. with entertainment by the BYU a cappella group Vocal Point. Dinner will cost $25 per plate for alumni and guests.

A discounted, combined price of $75 for alumni and $105 for guests will cover both the dinner and six CEU credits.

Visitor parking lots are located at the Museum of Art, the Marriott Center and directly east of the Hinckley Center. Shuttles will run from the Marriott Center parking lot beginning at 8:20 a.m..

Shirts with the “BYU School of Social Work" in blue embroidery are available for $25. For a photo and more details, e-mail socialwork@byu.edu. Those interested should pay online with their registration and e-mail socialwork@byu.edu with their size request and gender.
