BYU to mark National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Fans of BYU women's athletics are invited to participate in the festivities for National Girls and Women in Sports Day held Saturday (Feb. 3) at BYU.

The carnival-style event will give the community a chance to appreciate women's athletics. Players from each of the women's teams will be on hand to coach participants through various interactive activities. Some of the planned activities include hitting in batting cages and on a putting green, running relay races, soccer scrimmages and volleyball matches.

"The event will provide a great opportunity for girls in the community to interact with good role models and have exposure to different competitive sports," said Janie Penfield, BYU Associate AD and Senior Woman Administrator.

The free event held in the Smith Fieldhouse Annex will start at 10:30 a.m. At noon, all are invited to attend the free women's gymnastics meet against Boise State held in the Smith Fieldhouse.

This event marks the fourth year that BYU has participated in National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The national event started in 1987 as a way to celebrate the achievements of girls and women in athletics, provide opportunities for girls to become involved in new sports and get girls excited about healthy living.
