BYU Library to Honor the Pope's U.S. Tour with Special Bible Display

While the Pope might not be coming to Provo while he's in the United States this month, the Brigham Young University Harold B. Lee Library is getting into the pontiff celebration.

Beginning on Monday, Sept. 21, the Harold B. Lee Library will join with institutions across the country to simultaniously feature the same page each day for seven days of The Saint John's Bible.

The 7 Days, 7 Pages event will highlight some of the most exquisite pages of this first handwritten Bible of the modern era. This edition was produced by the Queen of England's Calligrapher Donald Jackson who led a team of illustrators and calligraphers to create a seven-volume work for Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minn., to celebrate the turn of the millennium.

The Harold B. Lee Library is the only institution in Utah with a set of these remarkable books. Generous donors helped BYU's Lee Library acquire a Heritage Edition of the work, a full-size fine press edition hand bound in leather. The library traditionally displays a volume in the entrance to the L. Tom Perry Special Collections.

Here's the schedule of pages to be displayed:

Monday, Sept. 21: Creation (Penateuch volume - Genesis 1)

Tuesday, Sept. 22: Abraham and Sarah  (Penateuch volume - Genesis 15 and 17)

Wednesday, Sept. 23: Ten Commandments  (Penateuch volume - Exodus 20)

Thursday, Sept. 24: Peter's Confession (Gospels & Acts volume - Matthew 16)

Friday, Sept. 25: Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes (Gospels and Acts volume - Mark 6)

Saturday, Sept. 26: Two Cures (Gospels and Acts volume - Mark 5)

Monday, Sept. 28: Pentecost (Gospels and Acts volume - Acts 1)

The Saint John's Bible can be viewed in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections of the BYU library Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., on Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Since the library is closed on Sundays, the final page will be available to view on Monday, Sept. 28. Admission is free and parking is available in the campus visitor parking lots.
