BYU Kennedy Center announces staff changes

Brigham Young University’s David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies has announced the appointment of three new staff members.

Donna Lee Bowen replaced Chad Emmett as the Middle East studies Arabic program coordinator. She is a professor of political science and vice president of the American Institute for North Africa. She obtained two Fulbright grants for her overseas research and completed consulting projects for the World Bank, Smithsonian Institute and the United States Agency for International Development.

Bowen received master’s and doctoral degrees in Near Eastern languages and civilizations from the University of Chicago.

Dana Pike was given a three-year appointment as coordinator of a new major in Ancient Near Eastern studies. Pike has been a member of BYU’s religion faculty since 1992, serving at BYU’s Jerusalem Center and as a member of the international team of editors for the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Pike received a bachelor’s degree in Near Eastern archaeology and anthropology from BYU and a doctorate in Hebrew and Near Ancient Eastern studies from the University of Pennsylvania.

Danny Damron joined the Kennedy Center as a one-year grant writer. He is working on funding for both the Center for the Study of Europe and the Latin American studies program. He also coordinates the European internship program, which places students in Parliament offices in Scotland and Belgium.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science from BYU, Damron earned a master’s degree in political science and a doctorate in comparative politics from Purdue University.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.

BYU team helps create diagnostic tool that achieves accuracy of PCR tests with faster, simpler nanopore system

A new diagnostic tool developed by Brigham Young University and UC Santa Cruz researchers can test for SARS-CoV-2 and Zika virus with the same or better accuracy as high-precision PCR tests in a matter of hours.
