BYU Jazz Lab Band to perform big-band classics April 8

Featuring original Capitol Records scores from BYU Special Collections

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents the Jazz Lab Band in concert of big-band classics Thursday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

The performance is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The Jazz Lab Band, conducted by Daniel Henderson, will feature Kelly Eisenhour as a guest vocalist.

The program consists of music from the L. Tom Perry Special Collections holdings of original big band scores donated to BYU by Capitol Records and organized as part of an ORCA project by Henderson last semester.

"This is the second concert where BYU groups have performed this music," Henderson said. "A lot of the songs were No. 1 on the Billboard charts and sold millions of copies. But no one has been able to perform the music for years, because up until recently, no one knew where the music was. This was extremely popular music, and now, 60 years later, this is a historic concert."

The program will include music by Richard Rogers, Irving Berlin, Bob Brookmeyer, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, D. Fields and J. McHugh, Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler, Joe McCoy, Ryan Crandall and Leo Brouwer.

For more information, contact Daniel Henderson at (801) 422-3171.
