BYU International Study Programs plan open house Sept. 23

Students interested in study abroad, international internships, international volunteer or international field study programs are invited to attend the International Study Programs fall open house on Thursday, Sept. 23 from 3 to 6 p.m. on the Herald R. Clark Building's south lawn (weather permitting).

Each department-sponsored program will be represented, and students will have a chance to speak to former program members. In the event of inclement weather, the open house will move indoors to 238 HRCB.

"One of my goals is to help students understand how valuable an international educational experience can be," said T. Lynn Elliott, ISP director, hired in June to replace the former director, Rodney Boynton, who left to serve as mission president in Milan, Italy.

"In my years dealing with international student programs, I have rarely met a student who is unhappy with their experience abroad. On the contrary, for the vast majority of students, their international experience is life changing, and often in unexpected ways," said Elliott. "I have met many students whose international experience has led to changes in majors, opened up career paths, or given students a leg up in getting into professional or graduate schools. For a dedicated student, an international experience is simply invaluable."

ISP is responsible for managing all credit-bearing international options for BYU and operates two offices at the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies. Administrative offices are housed in 204 Herald R. Clark Building (HRCB), where the coordinators support colleges and departments across campus to partner with the Kennedy Center in combining the logistics and management of academic international experiences.

Student Services occupies 280 HRCB, where student facilitators handle student questions and applications and offer peer counseling as students who have participated in the international programs.

College deans and department chairs interested in adding international study to their programs are invited to contact Elliott at (801) 422-6244.

Students are cautioned to plan early to incorporate an international experience into their curricula. Programs are recruited a year in advance.
