BYU hosts Young Artists of Voice competition Jan. 13, 15, 17

The Young Artists of Voice competition will feature top talent from Brigham Young University’s School of Music in three rounds Jan. 13, 15 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harris Fine Arts Center‘s Madsen Recital Hall.

Preliminary rounds will be held Tuesday and Thursday, Jan. 13 and 15. The preliminary rounds are free, and no tickets are required. The final round and awards presentation will take place Saturday, Jan. 17. Tickets are required for the final round and may be purchased for $6 online at byuarts.com, by phone at (801) 422-4322 or in person at the Harris Fine Arts Center Ticket Office.

Each year, the top 25 vocal performance students are invited to participate. Eight different awards will be given, with the top male and top female each receiving the Nancy Peery Marriott Singer of the Year Award.

Among this year’s final round judges is mezzo-soprano Carla Rae Cook, who has performed with the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Prior judges have included Utah vocalists JoAnn Ottley and Michael Ballam as well as Metropolitan Opera star Frederica von Stade.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
