BYU hosts National Dancesport Championships March 12-15

The American Ballroom Company in cooperation with the Brigham Young University Ballroom Dance Division will host the 2003 United States National Dancesport Championships Wednesday through Saturday, March 12-15, in the Marriott Center.

Competitions begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. Ticket prices range from $4 to $30 Wednesday through Friday and from $9 to $50 on Saturday for a one-day pass.

More than 10,000 spectators and 2,000 dancers are expected for this year's event. Participants will include professional as well as amateur competitors gathering from as far away as California, Florida and New York.

Dances to be performed include the Cabaret, Lindy Hop, Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, Jive and the standard category dances of Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Quickstep.

Nine national titles will be awarded during the competition. Preliminary rounds will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day, with finalists competing in the evenings.

On Thursday evening, championships will be determined for the Division 2 Youth Formation Teams in the Latin and Standard categories as well as the Amateur Cabaret Championship.

The Utah High School Team Match will be held Friday night. On Saturday, the United States Professional Standard Championships will be performed with the top two couples advancing to the world championships in November.
