BYU hosts Community Outreach Day Jan. 17 to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

Mayor Mia Love of Saratoga Springs will address participants

Brigham Young University’s Center for Service and Learning will hold its annual Community Outreach Day to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Monday, Jan. 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants can register from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom for service projects throughout the day.

At 9:30 a.m., keynote speaker Mia Love, mayor of Saratoga Springs, will give a devotional address. Love, who became mayor in 2010, served six years as a member of the Saratoga Springs City Council. In 2010 she was named Utahn of the Year by The Salt Lake Tribune. She is originally from New York and Connecticut and attended the University of Hartford.

Working with Utah Valley University and United Way of Utah County, students will complete both on-campus and off-campus service projects. On-campus projects will include assembling hygiene kits, writing letters to soldiers and cutting fabric for blankets. Off-campus projects will include cleaning the Orem Public Library, working with children at local community center and working at local animal shelters.

“Community Outreach Day is when we bring together the entire community to honor Martin Luther King’s legacy of service with our own service to others,” said Charles Krebs, spokesperson for the event.

For more information on the outreach project, contact Charles Krebs at (859) 684-8918 or e-mail at communityoutreachday@byu.edu.

In addition to these activities, the university's Multicultural Services will sponsor a candlelight walk and memorial program beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Carillon Bell Tower.
