BYU hosts Annual Symposium on Books for Young Readers July 18-19

The 26th Brigham Young University Symposium on Books for Young Readers will be  Thursday and Friday, July 18-19, in the Provo City Library, located at 550 N. University Avenue, Provo.

Registration is available online at ce.byu.edu/cw/bfyr/registration.php or by calling (877) 221-6716 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. during weekdays. More information about schedules and registration is available at ce.byu.edu/cw/bfyr/.

This symposium is open to librarians, teachers, parents and anyone age 13 and older who enjoys children's literature. Seven nationally known authors and illustrators will share their unique perspectives on children's books, followed by question-and-answer sessions. 

In addition, two autograph sessions and four informal discussion groups with individual presenters will be available. The symposium's Virginia Sorensen Lecture and reception will be held in the Wilkinson Student Center.

The 2013 lineup of acclaimed creators of children's literature is as follows: Karen Cushman, author of a Newbery Medal winner, “The Midwife's Apprentice”; Tony M. DiTerlizzi, author of “The Spiderwick Chronicles” series; Steve Jenkins, the author of a Caldecott Honor winner, “What Do You Do with a Tail Like This?”; Jennifer Nielsen, author of “The False Prince (The Ascendance Trilogy)”; Sara Pennypacker, author of “Clementine” and Philip and Erin Stead, authors of a Caldecott Medal winner, “A Sick Day for Amos McGee.”

Parking is available free of charge at the Provo City Library and in the visitor parking lots on the BYU campus. Children's books will be available for purchase at a 20 percent discount at a special BYU Bookstore annex in the Provo City Library.

Also on Thursday evening at the BYU Bookstore, the participants will be given a 20 percent discount coupon valid for all items in the store, excluding textbooks and education computer products.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
