BYU hosts annual Chamber Music Festival May 11-12, 18-19

The annual Deseret Chamber Music Festival, this year featuring a special tribute to the music of Canadian artist Jim Hiscott, will be held Friday-Saturday, May 11-12, and Friday-Saturday, May 18-19 at Brigham Young University. All concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. A pass to all four concerts is $14, while individual tickets are $7 or $5 for seniors and students.

Concerts include:

— May 11: “The Music of Jim Hiscott,” featuring the BYU faculty wind ensemble Orpheus Winds, Eric Hansen on doublebass, Ray Smith and Daron Bradford on saxophone and Scott Holden on piano.

— May 12: “The Music of Jim Hiscott,” featuring Jim Hiscott on button accordion, with Orpheus Winds, Eric Hansen on doublebass, Monte Belknap on violin, Claudine Bigelow on viola, Ron Brough on percussion, Kandis Taylor on percussion and Scott Holden on piano.

— May 18: “The Rite of Spring,” featuring Scott Holden and Robin Hancock on the piano as well as performances by Lawrence Vincent, tenor; Claudine Bigelow, viola; Jaren Hinckley, clarinet; Eric Hansen, doublebass; and Christian Asplund, piano.

—May 19: BYU's faculty ensemble the Deseret Chamber Strings, with Scott Holden on piano.

Jim Hiscott has been performing his own works for button accordion in chamber, orchestral and solo recitals for two decades across Canada and in the United States. After earning a degree in physics, he went on to study music compostition with Samuel Dolin at the Royal Conservatory of Music and David Lidov and Richard Teitelbaum at York University. His compositions have been performed across North America, Europe and Asia by many artists.
