BYU to host antiquities scholar from University of Damascus fall semester

Brigham Young University will host Amr al-Azm, a faculty member at the University of Damascus, as a guest professor on campus during fall semester 2006.

Azm will teach two art history classes and an anthropology class to graduate and undergraduate students. He will also be available to guest lecture on the ancient or modern Middle East for interested faculty or campus organizations.

The courses are funded by a U.S. State Department Education Grant and the Department of Anthropology in conjunction with the Azem Ottoman Project in Damascus. Azm will be hosted by the art history and curatorial studies major and the art education major of the Visual Arts Department.

Visual arts faculty members Donna Kay Beattie and Cynthia Finlayson are the sponsoring faculty members.

Azm received his doctoral degree in archaeology from the University of London. He has participated in excavations at nearly every major site in Syria and previously served as director of the Department of Conservation and Technology at the Syrian Department of Antiquities.

For more information, contact Cynthia Finlayson at (801) 422-5628 or calderfin@aol.com.
