BYU Folk Music Ensemble to present variety of styles in March 10 concert

Brigham Young University’s Folk Music Ensemble, directed by Mark Geslison, will present an evening of Celtic, Klezmer and world folk dance music Wednesday, March 10, 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or at arts.byu.edu.

The Folk Music Ensemble consists of three different groups. First on the program will be the Touring Band, which will perform folk dance music, followed by the Celtic Ensemble, which will perform music from Ireland, Scotland, England, Cape Breton and Wales. Music from Eastern Europe and Israel will then be played by the Klezmer Ensemble.

The Folk Music Ensemble was originally formed in 1982 to provide BYU’s International Folk Dance Ensemble with live music on the dance ensemble’s international tours. The Folk Music Ensemble has since become a performing group in its own right, traveling around the country and globe.

The Celtic Ensemble will be in Scotland in late April and early May attending two music festivals. The touring ensemble is on a mid-semester tour right now in Colorado, and will spend two weeks in Nauvoo, Ill., this summer. Next year the student musicians will travel to central Europe.
