BYU Folk Music Ensemble to perform March 18 at Madsen Recital Hall

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents the Folk Music Ensemble in concert on Thursday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Tickets at $9 and $3 off with BYU or student ID are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or at www.byu.edu/hfac.

The ensemble, directed by Mark Geslison, will perform traditional and contemporary Celtic and world music.

Members of the ensemble include Heidi Beddoes, Stacey Francom, Lacey Madson, Lisa Malan, Doug Mumford, Andrew Williams, Dennis Contreras, Tim Fellow, Dustin Kenyon, Dave Peery and Holly Tanner.

The ensemble members sing and play a variety of traditional folk instruments, such as the fiddle, mandolin, banjo, dulcimor, guitar, bass, harmonica, accordion and bodhran (a Celtic drum). Unique percussion instruments including bongos, bones and spoons keep the rhythm as the ensemble performs.

The group was originally formed in 1982 to accompany BYU’s International Folk Dance Ensemble with live music on the dance ensemble’s international tours.

Currently, the Folk Music Ensemble performs shows to a variety of local audiences in addition to its performances with BYU’s International Folk Dancers.
