BYU Folk Dance Ensemble celebrates 50 years in concerts Feb. 10-11

Brigham Young University’s Folk Dance Ensemble will perform a 50th anniversary program, “Reflections,” featuring music and dance from cultures around the world Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11, at 7:30 p.m. in 166 Richards Building.

Tickets are $5. To purchase tickets, call the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 422-4322 or visit performances.byu.edu.

Celebrating 50 years of performances, the Folk Dance Ensemble will showcase dances from an array of cultures, including Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North American.

“Audiences will be very familiar with some of the dance styles presented in the program,” said Ed Austin, artistic director of the ensemble. “The ‘Riverdance’ style of Irish hardshoe, our own American clogging and Cossack dancing from Ukraine are all perennial favorites.”

The 47 musicians, technicians, support crew members and dancers, wearing vibrant costumes true to the cultures represented, combine to form a diverse performing group.

Their repertoire includes exotic Indian dances, harmonic Croatian songs and Hungarian men’s slapping dances. Performers are students from states across the United States and countries throughout the world.

Plans are underway for a 50th anniversary reunion later this year for Folk Dance Ensemble alumni.

For more information, contact Ed Austin at (801) 422-3384.
