BYU Fine Arts and Entertainment Calendar for May 2007

Friday, May 4

The BYU Singers will present a “Bon Voyage” concert at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center in preparation for their South Africa tour, which will begin three days later. Ronald Staheli will conduct, and admission is free.

Friday, May 11

"Evening of Dance" will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall Friday-Saturday, May 11-12. Creative dance by children and teens will be featured. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.

The first concert of the Deseret Chamber Music festival will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, with additional concerts Saturday, May 12, and Friday and Saturday, May 18-19. A festival pass to all four concerts is $14, while individual tickets to the concerts are $7 or $5 for seniors and students. The first concert will be “The Music of Jim Hiscott,” featuring the BYU faculty wind ensemble Orpheus Winds, Eric Hansen on doublebass, Ray Smith and Daron Bradfordon saxophone and Scott Holden on piano. Saturday, May 12

The second concert of the Deseret Chamber Music festival will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, with additonal concerts Friday and Saturday, May 18-19. A Festival Pass to all four concerts is $14, while individual tickets to the concerts are $7 or $5 for seniors and students. The second concert will be “The Music of Jim Hiscott,” and feature Jim Hiscott on button accordion, with the BYU faculty wind ensembleOrpheus Winds, Eric Hansen on doublebass, Monte Belknap on violin, Claudine Bigelow on viola, Ron Brough and Kandis Taylor on percussion and Scott Holden on piano. Friday, May 18

The Ballroom Dance Company will present a showcase at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.

The third concert of the Deseret Chamber Music festival will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, while the final concert takes place Saturday, May 19. This third concert is titled “The Rite of Spring” and features Scott Holden and Robin Hancock on the piano as well as performances by Lawrence Vincent, tenor; Claudine Bigelow, viola; Jaren Hinckley, clarinet; Eric Hansen, doublebass; and Christian Asplund, piano. Saturday, May 19

The third concert of the Deseret Chamber Music festival will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, while the final concert takes place Saturday, May 19. Friday, May 25

The last installment of the Winter 2007 L. Tom Perry BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series will play at 7 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium. The feature is “Captain of the Clouds” starring James Cagney, Dennis Morgan, Brenda Marshall and Alan Hale. The film was directed by Michael Curtiz and is a Memorial Day Tribute and a companion to the Special Collections World War II Exhibit now on display at the Lee Library. James Cagney plays an American-born bush pilot who joins the Royal Canadian Air Force after hearing of the Blitzkrieg bombings of London.

Wednesday, May 30

BYU presents “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” to run Wednesday, May 30, through Friday, June 15 except on Sundays and Mondays. Performance are at 7:30 p.m. in the Pardoe Theater. The musical is based on the popular characters in the “Peanuts” comic strip. Tickets are $12 or $7 weeknights and $8 weekends with a BYU or student ID.Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.
