BYU Fine Arts and Entertainment calendar for March 2008

Saturday, March 1

The BYU Theatre for Young Audiences presents the Cleveland Signstage on Tour with a deaf theatre adaptation of “James and the Giant Peach.” The evening performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee performance will begin at 2 p.m., both in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets for the evening show are $10 for general admission or $6 with a BYU or student ID and $6 for children age two and older. All tickets for the matinee are $6. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-4322 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.

The BYU Cougarettes will perform at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Covey Center for the Arts, 425 W. Center Street in Provo. All tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Covey Center or by visiting coveycenter.org.

Tuesday, March 4

Brigham Young University faculty artist Geralyn Giovannetti, oboe, will perform with her group the Sundance Trio in a recital at 5:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Thursday, March 6

The American Piano Quartet, featuring faculty artists Jeffrey Shumway, Robin Hancock and Scott Holden with guest artist Paul Pollei, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are $10 for general admission or $7 with a BYU or student ID and can be purchased from the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-4322 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.

Saturday, March 8

Current and former members of the BYU Chamber Orchestra will perform together in a memorial concert honoring former School of Music director and conductor Clyn Barrus, featuring music by Gioachino Rossini, Claude Debussy, Richard Strauss and Aaron Copland under the direction of Kory Katseanes. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Tuesday, March 11

Winners from the BYU School of Music auditions will perform an “Evening of Concertos” with the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are $10 for general admission or $7 with a BYU or student ID and can be purchased from the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by visiting performances.byu.edu or by calling (801) 422-4322.

BYU vocal faculty artist Anna Mooy will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Thursday, March 13

Composer Jarrad Powell will speak in the School of Music Lecture Series at 11 a.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

BYU faculty artists Darrell Babidge, baritone, and Jennifer Welch-Babidge, soprano, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Margetts Theatre. Admission is free.

The Folk Music Ensemble, under the direction of Mark Geslison, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Conducted by Keith Lockhart, the Utah Symphony Chamber Orchestra will perform selections by David Crumb and George Crumb at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Faculty artist Douglas E. Bush will perform an organ recital in celebration of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 323rd birthday at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

The BYU Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Eric Hansen, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Thursday, March 20

The BYU Songwriters’ Showcase will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

“Roofsliding,” a new play written by BYU graduate student Morag Plaice Shepherd, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the Pardoe Theatre. No performances will be held Sunday or Monday evenings or Saturday evening, March 29. A matinee performance will be held on Saturday, March 29, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $14, with a $5 weeknight and $4 weekend discount with a BYU or student ID. Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
