BYU Fine Arts and Entertainment Calendar for February 2008

Friday, Feb. 1 through Saturday, Feb. 9

The Department of Theatre and Media Arts will present William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the Pardoe Theatre, Harris Fine Arts Center, at 7:30 p.m. A matinee performance will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. No performances will be held on Sundays or Mondays. Tickets are $9 weeknights and $10 weekends with a BYU or student ID, and $7 for all seats at the matinee performance. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2

The Dancers’ Company will portray compelling stories from the journals of the women of the Mormon Battalion in their performance “Dance in Concert: Onward, Alone.” Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center, with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Friday, Feb. 1

Faculty artist Monte Belknap, violin, will perform in a recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

Saturday, Feb. 2

Faculty artist Larry Green will present a solo recital full of the sounds of Latin American and Spanish guitar at 2:15 p.m. in the Museum of Art Auditorium. Admission is free.

Wednesday, Feb. 6

The Deseret Trio — BYU faculty artists Monte Belknap, violin; Julie Bevan, cello; and Jeffrey Shumway, piano — will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

Wednesday, Feb. 6 through Saturday, Feb. 16

BYU’s Theatre for Young Audiences will take a walk on the wild side in a new musical adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale “The Jungle Book” at 7:30 p.m. in the Nelke Theatre. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $6 for weeknightsand $7 for weekends with a BYU or student ID. No performances will be held on Sunday or Monday. Tickets for the dress rehearsals at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 and 7 and the matinees at 2 p.m. on Feb. 9 and 16 will be $5. Thursday and Friday, Feb. 7-8

Music/Dance/Theatre students will perform two showcase performances each night at 7 and 9 p.m. Tickets are $10, or $7 with a BYU or student ID and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-4322 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.

Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9

BYU’s multicultural performing group Living Legends will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 12-13

The BYU Singers and Concert Choir will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $7 with a BYU or student ID. Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 13-16

The BYU Jazz Festival will include performances by the BYU Jazz Voices on Wednesday, Feb. 13 and the Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band on Thursday, Feb. 14. Both shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free. The Festival Grand Concert, featuring BYU jazz groups Synthesis, Q’d Up and Jazz Voices, will be held on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Tickets for these shows are $15 for the general public and $10 with a BYU or student ID. Thursday, Feb. 14

Ron Simpson, a member of BYU’s media music and songwriting faculty, will speak at a School of Music lecture at 11 a.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

Thursday, Feb. 14 through Saturday, Aug. 16

The Museum of Art will exhibit “Masterworks of Victorian Art” from the collection of Australian collector John H. Schaeffer. The exhibit will include paintings and drawings by some of the most widely acclaimed artists of the era and will provide a rare opportunity to view some of the most beautiful and well-crafted works of this period. Monday, Feb. 18 through Friday, Feb. 29

Artwork by Nancy S. Whipple will be shown in an exhibit titled “Whimsical Journey” that will be displayed in the Main Gallery of the Harris Fine Arts Center’s Gallery 303. Admission is free.

Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 20-23

BYU opera students will perform a series of Italian opera scenes at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

Wednesday and Friday, Feb. 20 and 22

The BYU Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 or $7 with a BYU or student ID and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-4322 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.

Thursday, Feb. 21

The Department of Theatre and Media Arts will host a department forum featuring veteran actor Denny Miller at 11 a.m. in the Museum of Art Auditorium. Miller’s 50-year career has included 19 films, 138 TV commercials, 234 TV episodes—most notably 110 episodes of “Wagon Train” with Ward Bond. Admission is free.

The Utah Symphony under the direction of Keith Lockhart, will perform Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt, op. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $15, $8 with a BYU or student ID and $10 for senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office by calling (801) 422-4322.

Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21-23

The Department of Dance presents “Ballet in Concert” at 7:30 p.m. in the Pardoe Theatre, Harris Fine Arts Center. The BYU Philharmonic Orchestra with faculty guest artist Jennifer Welch-Babidge, soprano, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Wednesday, Feb. 27

Faculty artist Neil Thornock will present some of his compositions in a recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.[y5]

Wednesday, Feb. 27 through Saturday, March 1

The BYU Cougarettes will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Covey Center, 425 W. Center Street in downtown Provo. A matinee performance will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday. All tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Covey Center or by visiting coveycenter.org.

Thursday, Feb. 28

The faculty performance group Orpheus Winds — Jaren Hinckley, clarinet; Geralyn Giovannetti, oboe; Christian Smith, bassoon; and Laurence Lowe, horn — will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

Friday, Feb. 29

Group for New Music will premiere new works and revivals of “old” new works in the avant-garde and experimental traditions of the 20th and 21st centuries at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

Friday, Feb. 29 through Saturday, March 1

The BYU Theatre for Young Audiences presents the Cleveland Sign Stage on tour with a deaf theatre adaptation of the popular children’s book “James and the Giant Peach.” The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 or $6 with a BYU or student ID and $6 for children two and older. All tickets for the matinee are $6. BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
