BYU 2007-2008 Fine Arts and Entertainment Calendar

September 2007

At the BYU Museum of Art:

—“American Dreams: Selected Works from the Museum's Permanent Collection of American Art,” is an ongoing exhibition that examines artworks created by 18th, 19th and 20th century American artists as ideas or visions of America. This expanded exhibition of the Museum's permanent American art collection is presented on both levels of the Museum and includes prints, sculpture, photography and painting.

—“Cliché and Collusion: Video Works by Grant Stevens” will be featured from Sept. 14, 2007, to Feb. 9, 2008. The exhibition presents a collection of video installations by contemporary multimedia artist Grant Stevens. The exhibited works incorporate familiar excerpts from advertising, music, film and common conversation. In their juxtapositions the works build a dialogue about popular culture as well as communication and language.

Admission to all exhibits is free. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. For more information on exhibits and museum programs, call (801) 422-ARTS.

Thursday, Sept. 6, through Saturday, Sept. 22

BYU’s Department of Theater and Media Arts will bring the lovable characters of the “Peanuts” comic strip to life in its production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The play will run at 7:30 p.m. in the Pardoe Theater, Harris Fine Arts Center. There will be a matinee on Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. There will be no performances Sundays or Mondays. “King Lear,” William Shakespeare’s classic tale, will be the featured presentation for Theater for Young Audiences Sept. 25-28 and Oct. 2-5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Nelke Theater. “World of Dance” will be featured in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. This popular concert will feature repertoire of the Ballroom Dance Company, the Dancers’ Company, the International Folk Dance Ensemble, the Cougarettes and Theater Ballet. At the BYU Museum of Art:

— A Japanese woodblock print exhibition will be featured from Feb. 8, 2008, through June 14, 2008. Ukiyo-e, “pictures of the floating world,” is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints that celebrate the colorful life of the thriving Japanese urban centers between the 17th-20th centuries. Prints of landscapes, theaters and pleasure quarters in and around the burgeoning cities of Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Osaka and Kyoto present a unique vision of Japanese culture during this isolated period when Japan developed into a dominant force in the modern-day global community.

At the BYU Museum of Art:

— “Dismantling Geneva Steel: Photographs by Chris Dunker” will be on exhibit March 14, 2008, through Nov. 1, 2008. In November 2004, Chris Dunker began to photograph the Geneva Steel Works in Vineyard, Utah, at the onset of its demolition. Within three years the largest steel production facility west of the Mississippi ceased to exist. Dunker documented the vacated spaces, silenced machinery and advancing destruction of this once productive facility. His expressive photographs compose an evocative visual elegy of an industry that profoundly shaped the life of Utah County throughout the twentieth century.

Admission to all exhibits is free. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. For more information on exhibits and museum programs, call (801) 422-ARTS.
