BYU Experimental Theatre Club to present "The Decameron"

The Brigham Young University Experimental Theatre Club's newest production, "The Decameron," will begin Thursday, Aug. 9, and run through Saturday, Aug. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Margetts Theatre of the Harris Fine Arts Center.

Admission is free and seating begins at 7 p.m.

While most plays start production around a script — including casting, design and budgeting — this presentation of Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio's "The Decameron" began with the 650-year-old Italian text of 100 stories. The script was unearthed during subsequent rehearsals.

"Writing a script on a tight deadline hasn't always been easy, especially with a director who isn't afraid to ask for a rewrite. But I think that the final script of 'The Decameron' has been tempered and refined by this process to become a strong and vital piece of theatre,"said playwright Russell Warne."Maybe after seeing our production audiences can understand why this book has enthralled the world for more than six centuries."

The 90-minute production, which features eight of the stories, will be directed by Janine Sobeck, with final playwriting by dramaturg Russell Warne.  For more information, visit byu-etc.com
