BYU English Department hosts Writer's Portfolio Contest

Entries due Feb. 1

The English Department at Brigham Young University will sponsor the annual Writer’s Portfolio Contest with a prize of $500 to be awarded to the winner.

The contest is open to all full-time undergraduate and graduate students. All entries must be submitted to the English Department office, 4198 JFSB, by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Designed to encourage BYU students to develop a wide variety of writing skills, the rigorous contest requires students to submit writing pieces in five different categories: scholarly paper or article, technical paper, popular article, fiction and drama and poetry. At least one of the items must have been printed in or accepted by a publication having a professional editor.

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
