BYU education professor to discuss "Flags, Faith and Finishing the Race" June 30

Lynnette Erickson of the School of Education will present a Brigham Young University devotional, “Flags, Faith and Finishing the Race,” Tuesday, June 30, at 11:05 a.m. in the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium.

The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels. Visit byub.org/devotionals or speeches.byu.edu for rebroadcast and archive information.

Erickson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from BYU and taught elementary school in Payson, Utah, and Gilbert, Ariz., before being called to serve in the Montana Billings Mission.

Before leaving for her mission, Erickson decided that she would not return to teaching school. However, after she arrived home she taught one more year as a favor to a former principal. That year of teaching was so enjoyable and fulfilling that she returned to BYU to find out why it went so well and to earn a master’s degree in teaching and learning.

She taught at BYU for nearly five years after earning her master’s degree, and her experiences preparing teacher candidates helped her discover that teacher education was her passion. She then took a break and went to Arizona State University where she earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction, with an emphasis in elementary social studies.

Erickson’s professional interests focus generally on issues of teacher education and more specifically on the purposes of education and schooling and social studies. She is involved in collaborative studies focused on democratic practices and behaviors of teachers and students in the public schools.

Erickson serves as a Gospel Doctrine Sunday School teacher in her ward in Orem, and she is the mother of Kate, who will be a freshman at BYU this fall.
