BYU dancEnsemble will perform “Fragments” concert March 14-15

Brigham Young University modern dance performing group dancEnsemble will perform its “Fragments” concert, featuring works by both students and faculty, on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15.

Performances will be held both evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Dance Studio, 166 Richards Building. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-4322 or at the door.

Unlike most performing companies at BYU, dancEnsemble provides students with an opportunity to present their own choreography. “Fragments” will feature student choreography such as “Bound to Be Different,” a piece by Christine Tarabilda that looks at how people can get sucked into societal stereotypes. She uses straightjackets to represent the confinement of such restraints.

Another student choreographer, Jaclyn Hardcastle, developed her piece from her experience doing humanitarian service in Guatemala. "I hope that my dance speaks out to encourage others to be an instrument in helping relieve someone else's burdens," said Hardcastle.

Along with the student works, dancEnsemble will perform two faculty pieces. The group’s artistic director, PatDebenham will restage his work “Seven Squared,” a modern twist on square dancing. Robin McLelland will present “Forever Ever Land,” a piece that investigates child-like imagination using the poetry of Shel Silverstein.

For more information, contact Pat Debenham at (801) 422-3340.
