BYU Creative Works Competition offers cash prizes

Entries due Dec. 3

The Office of First-Year Experience and the Education in Zion Gallery are inviting new Brigham Young University students to submit creative works exploring the theme “An Education of the Whole Soul” in the 2010 Creative Works Competition. Entries are due Friday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m. at the Office of First-Year Experience, 2006 Jesse Knight Building.

The contest, part of BYU New Student Orientation, is open to all new or transfer students entering the university during summer term or fall semester 2010.

The text for this year’s theme is “Learning in the Light of Faith,” a collection of lectures given at BYU that was edited by President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The book encourages students to consider how scholarship, spiritual development and discipleship are interconnected.

"With each entering class at BYU, I enjoy seeing students develop an appreciation for the integration of the spiritual and the secular, or ‘disciple-scholarship,’” said Assistant Dean Heather Hammond, Office of First-Year Experience. “This type of learning is a welcome change in atmosphere for new students.”

Winners will be announced Friday, Dec. 17, and will receive recognition at an awards evening in January. One first-place prize of $500 will be awarded in each category. Honorable mentions will receive $50. All winning entries will be published on the First-Year Experience and Education in Zion websites.

This competition is designed to promote a variety of forms of creative expression as well as to encourage deep personal reflection about how learning and education bless lives both individually and collectively. Quality submissions will reflect themes from “Learning in the Light of Faith” as well as incorporate messages from the Education in Zion Gallery in the Joseph F. Smith Building.

Submissions are available in three different categories:

1.     Creative writing — essay, poetry, short-story fiction, etc.

2.     Visual arts — photography, painting, sculpture, etc.

3.     Performing arts — musical composition, dance, theater, film, etc.

“We are excited to offer this creative works competition to give new students an opportunity to express and celebrate this understanding,” said Hammond. “We are amazed at the talents they share."
