BYU composition faculty to showcase works in Jan. 25 recital

Members of the composition faculty at Brigham Young University’s School of Music will perform new compositions and "comprovisations" in a concert Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

The concert will feature music by Neil Thornock, Steve Ricks, Michael Hicks and Christian Asplund.

Wednesday’s concert will include Hicks’ "L'Épitaphe de Monk," a moving evocation of Thelonious’ “Crepuscule with Nellie”  performed by faculty pianist Scott Holden.  Also included will be Hicks’ "The Road" for accordion and electronics.

Asplund and Ricks will preview a series of comprovisations for trombone and piano by Asplund that will be featured at the International Society for Improvised Music Annual Festival Conference at William Patterson University in February.

Thornock will demonstrate his considerable organ "chops" with his own “Restless Iteration,” and faculty virtuoso Alex Woods will perform Thornock’s “Quasi Ciaccone” for solo violin.
