BYU Community Outreach Day Jan. 19 honors Martin Luther King Jr.

Prior to Brigham Young University's "Walk of Life" celebration of the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 6 p.m., students from BYU and Utah Valley State College are invited to participate in the annual Community Outreach Day Monday, Jan. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

BYU's Center for Service and Learning is organizing the day, which provides many service opportunities on the BYU campus and in the community. The activities are free and students, as well as the community, are welcome to attend.

Registration begins in the Wilkinson Student Center on the BYU campus at 8:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies will take place from 9:15 to 9:30 a.m., and service projects will last from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

"We are all in this together," said Brittany Wiscombe, student coordinator for the Center for Service and Learning. "When one person starts to give, a ripple effect occurs that can change peoples' lives, but it is up to us to decide to create the first ripple."

Service activities include gathering materials for a hygiene drive sponsored by the Food and Care Coalition of Utah Valley, working on a project for LDS Humanitarian Aid, visiting local retirement homes, cleaning public libraries, preparing school materials for children, and making toys and kits to send worldwide.

A blood drive will also be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the WSC Garden Court. Call the BYU Center for Service and Learning at (801) 422-8686 to sign up for the blood drive.

The "Walk of Life" activities will begin at 6 p.m. at the BYU Carillon Tower.
