BYU to close campus thoroughfares Dec. 26

To preserve its right to own roads

All Brigham Young University campus roads and parking lots will be closed by University Police beginning midnight, Dec. 25 and continuing until midnight, Dec. 26, 2005.

Provisions of Utah state law indicate that any highway (road) used continuously as a public thoroughfare for 10 consecutive years may become public property.

“The university closes its roads and parking lots every five years to preserve its right to own them,” said Chief Larry Stott of University Police.

BYU patrons and campus employees not required to work that day are reminded to plan activities and personal schedules to avoid any need to be on campus. All entrances to campus will be closed, including 450 East at the Marriott Center, 1230 North at the main entrance, Campus Drive and others.

Residents of campus housing may gain access to their residences from University Parkway, 900 East and University Avenue.

Contact University Police at (801) 422-2383 for additional information.
