BYU Center for Study of Europe sponsors art, essay competition for public school students

The Brigham Young University Center for the Study of Europe and International Outreach are sponsoring a Europe essay contest for middle and high school students and an art contest for K-6 students in the intermountain region.

All essay and art submissions are due Monday, May 24.

The essay contest, titled "Europe: Past, Present and Future," and the art contest with the theme "A Day in _______ (country name)," allow International Outreach, a program created by BYU's David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies, to build a community of European scholars and to generate interest in European studies.

For the essay contest, students must write a persuasive essay based on research and original ideas in response to one of the topics listed on the entry form. Students compete in two categories: grades 7-9 and 10-12.

The winners in each age group will receive a $100 award and two finalists will receive $50 awards. The schools of all winners and finalists will receive a $100 award and a set of "CultureGrams" for their school library.

For the art contest, first- through third-place winners will receive a $25 award and 10 honorable mentions will receive $10. The schools for the top three winners will receive $100 and the European "CultureGrams."

For more information, visit the CSE Web site at http://europe.byu.edu, or call Brenda Wadley at (801) 422-6277.
