BYU celebrates Heritage Week March 20-27

Includes 23rd annual Harold Cedartree Powwow Friday and Saturday

Heritage Week, a celebration of Hispanic, Polynesian and Native American cultures, will be held March 20 through March 27 on the Brigham Young University campus.

More than 500 student volunteers and performers as well as members of the community will participate in the events during the week, sponsored by the BYU Multicultural Student Services.

Tickets for the different events are available at the Wilkinson Student Center Information Desk.

Fiesta, the annual celebration of Hispanic cultures, will be held Saturday, March 20, in the Wilkinson Student Center. The celebration will feature traditional dances and presentations from different Latin American countries.

A presentation will be held in the main ballroom at 7 p.m. with a Latin dance beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Tickets for both events will be available at the door. Tickets for the show and dance are $5 and $3 for the dance only.

A Polynesian luau will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, March 23 and 24, in the Wilkinson Student Center main ballroom. The luau will showcase the theme "Children of Promise" through historical and cultural music, food and dance from various Pacific islands. Dinner will be served 5:30 p.m. with a show beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the luau dinner are $10 apiece and will be presold until Thursday, March 18. Tickets for the show only are $3 and will be available on both nights until they are sold out.

BYU's Living Legends (formerly the Lamanite Generation) will perform a 90-minute celebration of Latin American, Native American and Polynesian song and dance in a concert at BYU's de Jong Concert Hall Thursday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m.

Capping off the weeklong celebration, the Tribe of Many Feathers will present the 23rd Annual BYU Harold A. Cedartree Powwow Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27, in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom and Garden Court.

The Powwow will run Friday from 6 to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Cost is $4 at the door for the general public and $3 for BYU students with ID, with seniors and children age 10 and under getting in free.

Other activities include the annual drum contest and arts and crafts booths. Fry bread and Navajo tacos will also be available in the Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court. No admission will be charged for the Garden Court activities, open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
