BYU to celebrate Utah Archaeology Week May 11, 14

Field school will also open Goshen dig to public viewing May 11

Brigham Young University’s Department of Anthropology will host two events in honor of this year’s Utah Archaeology Week that runs from Saturday, May 7, through Saturday, May 14. Previously called Utah Prehistory Week, Utah Archaeology Week is celebrated statewide with various events and activities.

BYU’s Archaeological Field School is currently excavating near Goshen, Utah. As a part of Utah Archaeology Week, the Goshen landowners and director of the field school have invited visitors to go see the first-hand work of archaeologists as they discover pieces and artifacts from the lives of those who once lived in Utah Valley.

These visits will take place Wednesday, May 11, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Visits will last about an hour, and approximately 40 people can fill each time slot. More information and directions to the site can be obtained by calling (801) 422-0022 or emailing mpc_programs@byu.edu.

As a finale for Utah Archaeology Week, BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures will be hosting its annual Block Party, held Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The museum will have crafts, food, dancing, storytelling and more. Free tours of the museum’s newest exhibition, “Entwined: A Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya,” will be offered throughout the day as a part of the celebration.

"The Archaeology Week Block Party is a great day to come to the museum to learn and have fun at the same time,” said Kari Nelson, curator of education at the museum. “With demonstrations, activities and tours of the exhibitions, there is something for everybody.”

There will also be petroglyph making, face painting, basket weaving, corn grinding, flint knapping and lace making. A special performance by Morning Star, a Native American dance group, will precede storytelling and the closing of the event. All activities, food and tours are free to the public.

For more information, visit mpc.byu.edu or contact the museum at (801) 422-0020 or mpc@byu.edu. The museum is located at 100 E. 700 N. in Provo and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
