Several broadcast students in the Department of Communications at Brigham Young University recently received honors from the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation.
Paul McHardy, Danielle Wood and Kimberly Cone received top honors at the Society of Professional Journalist Mark of Excellence Awards in Indianapolis. The BYU students dominated the categories of radio news reporting, radio feature, radio sports reporting and radio newscast.
All three students can be heard regularly on KBYU-FM and BYU Radio.
The broadcast journalism program at BYU received more recognition when the NABEF recognized the sequence as one of the top ten programs in the country and awarded BYU student Jennifer Borget with a $20,000 scholarship.
An Atlanta native and first-generation college student, Borget said the scholarship will allow her to focus on her passion for broadcast journalism and not worry about the financial aspect of school.
“I can’t imagine doing anything else,” Borget said. “Meeting new people and learning about new things is probably what keeps me the most interested in it. Plus, it’s never the same thing every day. It’s always something new.”
Recognized as the premier professional organization in the industry, the National Association of Broadcasters has the goal of enabling students with financial need from diverse backgrounds to complete their undergraduate degrees and begin careers in broadcasting.
