BYU-based Deseret Piano Trio plans Feb. 16 recital

The Deseret Piano Trio, composed of Brigham Young University School of Music faculty members, will perform Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

With Jeffrey Shumway on the piano, Monte Belknap on the violin and Julie Bevan on the cello, the trio will perform the Piano Trio in E minor, Op. 67 by Dmitri Shostakovich and the Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 49 by Felix Mendelssohn.

Shumway is a professor of piano, and he received his bachelor’s degree in music from BYU, his master’s degree from Juilliard School of Music and his doctoral degree from Indiana University. A member of the American Piano Quartet, Shumway has performed worldwide, created his own recording and published several arranged piano pieces.

As a performing violinist for 30 years, Belknap won the International Starling Violin Competition receiving a full scholarship to the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio. Belknap studied chamber music with some of the world’s leading performing ensembles, including the Juilliard, Tokyo and LaSalle string quartets, as well as the Beaux Arts Piano Trio.

Bevan performed with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and was the principal cellist of the Chicago String Ensemble for 15 seasons. She performed with other orchestras as well, including Storioni Ensemble and the Ars Viva Orchestra in Chicago. As a chamber musician, Bevan performed with the Chicago Ensemble, the Fontenelle String Quartet of the Omaha Symphony and the Testore Piano Trio.
