BYU Ballroom Dance Company will "Capture the Magic" April 7-8

The Brigham Young University Ballroom Dance Company will “Capture the Magic” Friday and Saturday, April 7-8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Marriott Center, with a matinee performance Saturday, April 8, at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for evening performances and $7 for the matinee. To purchase tickets, call the Marriott Center Ticket Office at (801) 422-BYU1.

“From a Latin American cha cha to an elegant waltz, the 124 dancers will captivate the audience with precise timing, flawless technique, expressive choreography and vibrant costumes,” said Claudia Hill, a BYU dance faculty member.

BYU’s Ballroom Dance Company will perform its award-winning medleys “Rhapsody ‘n Blues” and “Cinemagic” for the last time in concert. They will also dance a new waltz, “Walk With Me,” choreographed by Ton Redpath from San Diego, and a lively quickstep, “Gotta Get On That Train,” choreographed by Gary and Diana McDonald from New Jersey.

Four couples will perform a lyrical theatre arts number, “If You Could Hie to Kolob,” choreographed in 2005 by director Lee Wakefield to commemorate Joseph Smith’s 200th birthday.

The Ballroom Dance Company will also perform two swing pieces: “Great Gosh a Mighty,” a West Coast swing number choreographed by Buddy Schwimmer from Los Angeles, and “Swing Brother Swing,” a lindy hop dance choreographed by Elaine Grenko. The show will close with a “Pirates of the Caribbean” piece choreographed by Alain Doucet and Anik Jolicoeur.

The BYU Ballroom Dance Company has won the U.S. National Formation Dance Champion Team title consecutively since 1982 and has received 18 first-place awards at the British Open Ballroom Dance Competition since 1971.
